Under His Wings

(Ruth 2:12)

My story starts one summer morning as I drove my crew to Malott on an old school bus. I raised fruit in two locations, about five miles apart. Leaving the home place, we had to go down a steep grade of about 6% slope for almost a mile. About halfway down the hill, I discovered I had no brakes, nor could I shift to a lower gear. I looked in my rearview mirrors, and on the left side the tires had come out to the edge of the vehicle.

I had a broken axle!

There was nothing I could do but pray. I told the Lord, “We’re in Your hands.” We rode it out to the bottom where the road leveled out and we came to a stop as the wheel fell off. Had it come off while we were speeding down the hill it would’ve been disastrous. We were under God’s wings and His protection.

I remember a hymn called “Under His Wings.” This is the third stanza:

Under His wings, what precious enjoyment
There will I hide till life’s trials are over.
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me
Resting in Jesus I’m safe evermore.
