Perfect Timing

By the Lord's providence I had just gone through a basic first-aid training course at school (4th grade) and little did I know that I was going to use it – soon.

We were attending a church function one evening and my mom had decided to stop afterward at a friend’s new home under construction nearby to see how it was coming along. My siblings and I waited in the car. It was already dusk, and the property did not have lights.

Mom was up on the second story looking around and started to make her way down the stairway, which lacked rails. She fell and hit her head, resulting in a large gash. Fortunately, she remained conscious (a miracle in itself) and made it to the car.

Thanks to the training I had received, I immediately recalled that the first thing to do in an emergency is to stay calm. I ran for help to the nearest house with lights on. A woman answered her door, and I explained what had happened. Her daughter, who was training to be a nurse, immediately rushed out to start applying pressure to the wound. Shortly after that, Mom was rushed to the hospital.

Although she had 47 stitches, there were no long-term health effects. Now she barely has a scar to show for it. I am so thankful to God for His grace in saving my mom’s life that night and for everything that has meant to our family.

Psalm 116:8-13 comes to mind. “For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord.”
